Behind the scenes at Healthwatch: a student’s placement experience

As part of my work placement, I spent time at Healthwatch and learned how the organisation works to improve health and social care services for local people. Before starting my placement, I didn’t know much about Healthwatch or the work it does. During my time here, I learned that Healthwatch listens to people's experiences and uses their feedback to highlight what is working well and where services could be improved.

A welcoming and professional environment

One of the things I enjoyed most about my placement was being part of a friendly and professional working environment. The staff were welcoming and always willing to help when I had questions or needed guidance.

It was interesting to see how staff communicate with each other, organise their work and work together on different projects. This gave me a better understanding of what it is like to work in a professional organisation.

Developing new skills

My placement also helped me develop skills that I can use in the future. I became more confident communicating with others and working in a workplace environment. I also developed my teamwork and organisational skills.

Another important thing I learned was how health and social care services work and how people's experiences can help bring attention to areas where improvements may be needed.

Seeing what happens behind the scenes

I found it particularly interesting to learn how Healthwatch collects people's views and experiences. I also got an insight into some of the work that happens behind the scenes, including organising information, planning projects and working as a team.

This showed me that there is a lot of work involved in making sure people's voices are heard. Even tasks that may not be visible to the public can play an important role in supporting Healthwatch's work.

Looking back on my placement

Overall, I really enjoyed my time at Healthwatch. The placement helped me become more confident and allowed me to develop new skills and knowledge.

Most importantly, I learned how important it is to listen to people's experiences and make sure their voices are heard. I am grateful to have had the opportunity to experience working at Healthwatch, and I will take what I have learned with me as I continue to think about my future.
