New Survey Launched to Hear from Family Carers in Barking and Dagenham
Family carers are often the hidden backbone of the health and care system, providing vital support for elderly loved ones or the ones with complex needs such as dementia, learning disabilities, autism, mental health conditions, or chronic illnesses. Yet feedback shows that carers are not always involved or supported during medical appointments, and their insights can sometimes be overlooked.
This survey, which runs from July to September 2025, is part of a wider project aiming to understand carers’ experiences during health and care appointments, explore whether professionals value and involve carers, and identify what can be improved. It will also look at how tools like Hospital Passports are working for the people who are cared for.
Carers who take part will help Healthwatch:
- Understand how included carers feel in appointments and decisions
- Identify the biggest challenges carers face
- Gather suggestions on what could make appointments and support services more carer-friendly
- Assess whether carers’ own health and wellbeing needs are recognised
- All responses will be kept confidential, and the insights gathered will contribute to a report with practical recommendations for local health and care providers.
Why take part?
Family carers have unique knowledge about the person they care for, yet they are too often left out of crucial conversations. We want to make sure carers’ voices shape services in our borough so they feel supported and valued.
Carers who complete the survey can also choose to enter a prize draw as a thank you for their time.
How to take part:
Family carers in Barking and Dagenham can complete the survey online or request a paper copy by contacting Healthwatch on 0800 298 5331 or info@healthwatchbarkinganddagenham.co.uk
