Healthwatch visit highlights positive patient experiences at King George Hospital Gynaecology Department
Overall, the findings were positive. Women praised staff for their kindness, professionalism and the quality of care they received. Many described doctors and nurses as understanding, informative and supportive, with all respondents who answered the question saying they were either satisfied or very satisfied with the care they received on the day.
Patients also highlighted examples of quick referrals and efficient appointments. Half of those spoken to received their first appointment within a month of referral, and most found the referral process easy or very easy.
However, the report also identified areas where improvements are needed. Some women described long waits for appointments, difficulties with referral pathways, limited information about managing symptoms while waiting for treatment, and communication issues. Healthwatch also observed occasions where patient privacy and confidentiality could have been handled more sensitively.
Based on the findings, Healthwatch has made several recommendations, including:
- Providing clearer information about waiting times throughout the patient journey.
- Offering better advice on symptom management while patients wait for specialist care.
- Ensuring patients receive clear information about their condition and treatment options.
- Promoting respectful, confidential communication when discussing sensitive information.
- Continuing to support patients affected by appointment disruptions and system issues.
Barking, Havering and Redbridge University Hospitals NHS Trust has welcomed the findings and responded positively to the recommendations. The Trust has produced an action plan outlining improvements already underway, including strengthening communication about waiting times, improving access to patient information, reinforcing confidentiality standards and continuing to support patients affected by service disruptions.
Healthwatch Barking & Dagenham will continue working with the Trust to monitor progress and ensure women's experiences help shape future improvements to local NHS services.
