Women’s reproductive and sexual health support experiences in Barking and Dagenham
The Barking and Dagenham Healthwatch report on women’s health investigates the accessibility and quality of reproductive and sexual healthcare within Barking and Dagenham. Gathering insights from 96 women and one transgender male, the study explores healthcare support and access within the community. While 70 respondents had accessed reproductive or sexual health services, the findings highlight opportunities for improvement, including the need for more time during appointments, reduced wait times, and greater availability of female doctors to enhance patient comfort and care.
The report also highlights that 51% of respondents felt their concerns were taken seriously, while others expressed a need for greater recognition of their symptoms. As a result, many turned to online resources for additional information, with 85% using Google as their primary source for health advice, reflecting a desire for more accessible guidance and support within the healthcare system. The effect of delays and lack of support correlates to the negative impact on mental and physical health among the respondents, with 55% reporting that long waits worsened their mental health. In addition, the impact of this has affected their work attendance.
The report also stresses the need for culturally sensitive and patient-centred care targeting more support for ethnic communities. The respondents also voiced the need for healthcare providers to gain more cultural competency: understanding religious and cultural differences. Targeted improvements are vital to make healthcare more accessible and supportive, especially for women. Increasing awareness and reducing stigma around reproductive health is crucial to eliminate the fear of discrimination or embarrassment. By addressing these issues healthcare services provide improved quality of care as well as creating an inclusive, supportive healthcare environment that meets the community needs.
