Healthwatch report praises patient experience at Barking Community Diagnostic Centre

The Enter and View report, based on an unannounced visit carried out in February 2026, found that most patients rated their overall experience as “very good”, with particular praise for friendly reception staff, clear communication, comfortable waiting areas and timely appointments.

The CDC, operated by Barking, Havering and Redbridge University Hospitals NHS Trust, opened in April 2024 as part of the NHS national programme to provide diagnostic tests closer to home. The centre offers MRI, CT, ultrasound, cardiology and respiratory testing, alongside newer diagnostic technologies aimed at improving patient experience and speeding up diagnosis.

Patients interviewed during the visit described the staff as “nice and friendly” and welcomed the reassurance they received during appointments. Many also praised the efficiency of the check-in process and appreciated being kept informed when clinics were running behind schedule.

The report found:

  • High levels of trust and confidence in clinical staff
  • Strong satisfaction with cleanliness and comfort of the environment
  • Most patients being seen on time or within a short wait
  • Positive experiences with booking appointments both online and by phone

Healthwatch also identified several areas for improvement, including providing clearer information about test results and next steps, improving access to interpretation services, and strengthening communication and reassurance during appointments.

In response, the Trust welcomed the findings and confirmed that it will continue to improve patient communication, staff support, and accessibility services. Planned actions include reinforcing good communication practices with staff, reviewing interpretation service awareness, and improving information for patients about results and follow-up care.

The report concluded that the Community Diagnostic Centre is delivering a strong patient experience overall, while recognising opportunities to further enhance clarity, accessibility and consistency for patients across the service.
